Organic gardening has been traced back to the start of man kind. They would gather vegetables from the woods and fields then save the seeds for the next season. Over time we learned how to use fertilizers (manure and compost) to increase the output of the crop. But with time science has introduced chemical plant growth accelerants, chemical based fertilizers, and pesticides, with the idea of larger crops. Guess what? It worked, with one big draw back; chemical residues were in the vegetables we eat.
These chemicals in small quantities or dosages may not be harmful, but over time these amounts can add up to a very dangerous level. Organic gardening will remove the possibility of exposing your family to these chemicals. In organic gardening we can use green manures to eliminate the use of chemical fertilizers.
Organic gardening uses green manures that are called legumes and they include fava beans, clover, alfalfa, peas, lentils, and lupines. These plants have the ability to store nitrogen in their root systems, and when these crops are turned under during the normal planting time the natural decaying process will release the nitrogen into the soil removing the need for chemical fertilizers. We still need phosphorus and potassium to have healthy plant growth, and to deliver these elements we use compost.
Compost that is used in organic gardening will be made up of many different components and they are, coffee grounds, leaf mold, green waste, manure, bark, egg shells, and brown waste to name a few. To make organic compost you mix the ingredients in a process called layering and over time they will brake down into compost, this is discussed in the topic compost.
The organic garden is now ready for planting and we need seeds. You can plant almost anything that will grow in a normal garden carrots, beets, bush beans, basil, chives, cucumbers, eggplant, lettuce onions, radishes, and rosemary are just some of the many vegetables that are plant able in the organic garden.
